Gary is a native of Florida, where he received a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of West Florida in 1972.   In 1979, he came to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, where he was editorial cartoonist for 30 years. Since 1997, he has drawn the cartoon panel, "Pluggers," and in 2000, he began drawing for the comic strip "Shoe."
